Hello I am Cherilee, I am a proud mother of 3 fantastic boys, who fuel my passion for education and SEND.
I have established this website in order to have an open platform for people who would like to RELATE AND SHARE their experiences. My aim is to encourage parents, carers, families and anyone who knows a child or young person with autism or any other special needs condition. To express the highs and the lows and give and gain some knowledge in all things SEND related.
I am especially keen to appeal to people from ethnic minority communities, it would be great to break down the negative stereotypes that can often surround the subject of disabilities and special needs. Hence why my first blog is entitled ‘Should I be ashamed of my child?’. There has been many occasions were I had been made to feel as if I should hide my son away, or I have in made to feel uncomfortable. People at times fail to understand that it takes a lot of preparation and conversations, before venturing out. As many can hopefully relate to.
One of my son’s has Autism and another has ADHD, we have experienced many different scenarios on our journey that has shaped the way I consider different aspects of life and education. I currently work within education and I am so passionate, about how I support children who need a little help with their education. Taken from what I have learned from how I have been taught to support my son. Primarily from the professionals that have supported him, I have adapted what I have been taught in order for that to suit my family. No one technique will fit all, but I have taken what the professionals have advised and made sure that it suits my son. I have incorporated that into how I support the children I work with, it is so challenging trying to know what is the right techniques to consider at times. Whether that is how to incorporate information from the sleep doctors, the occupational therapists or the speech and language therapist etc.. You have to know what is best for you and your setting. I will share some of what I have learned in future blogs.
For my family, it’s Autism but for yours it might be another condition, for example ADHD, global delay, Asperger’s syndrome, conduct disorder and epilepsy to name a few. I am sharing my experiences but I would like for you to also do the same because I have learnt so many things from others and their experiences. Professionals who are also viewing this site I encourage them to share their experiences also, as a professional view is always respected and helpful. That is why I have added a testimonials section to my site.
I believe that it is extremely helpful for my mental health, to communicate how challenging and how rewarding parenting a child with autism can be.
On my parenting journey, I have learnt so many different techniques on how to parent each of my boys differently. They are all loved and respected equally and require different parenting styles.
RELATE AND SHARE.
Cherilee x
